why don't we take a small minute to slow down here and think about what is going on with our canadian seasons. just stop whatever it is that you are doing and look out the window. do it!
what do you see?
really, take a good look around; take it all in -- let yourself absorb the changes, let it really sink in...
our days are shorter, the nights and the mornings are significantly cooler, the leaves are changing colour and some areas they are even falling from the tree. the earth is cycling through seasons and there is death all around us. summer is dying, the leaves are dying -- this is a time of death, of mourning, of letting go of that which no longer serves us.
in days long ago, us humans would have been much more in tune with the cycles of seasons for we lived so intimately with them; we relied on them. in the days leading up to winter we would be sleeping more, conserving more energy and eating more as to fatten up for the long winter months. it is natural to slow down during this part of our year, it is normal to crave more foods and deeper sleeps.
i do not believe that it is a coincidence that it is flu season, nor do i think it is odd that the healthiest humans i know are experiencing detox symptoms: acne, sore throats, headaches, heart aches, muscle aches, low energy, fatigue etc. mother earth is detoxing right now -- why would we be any different? i would say that part of our issues is our grande capacity to resist that which is the fluidity of cycling seasons. just becasue we have food in the grocery store year round, and artificial lighting that enables "sunlight" 24 hours a day and heaters to heat our homes does not negate the reality that seasons are changing and our bodies are in tune with that rhythm.
this time of year is an excellent time of year to detoxify your body and your life.
what relationships no longer serve you? what unworn clothing in your closet can you finally part with? what junk lays around in your house and car than serves as nothing more than clutter? what goals are dead and gone and what rituals can you add to your life to infuse your existence with grounded inspiration? what does your diet like? perhaps its time to add in more water, more healthy fats and nuts and veggies and ditch a few of the summer beers and nachos.
this is the time if year to mourn the passing of a wonderful summer while honing in and coming back to ritual. it's bitter-sweet, i know. its hard to ay goodbye, its hard to let go, its hard to detox, its hard to feel death.
with all the death comes a rebirth.
with all endings come a beginning.
the cycles will continue and spring will come again and the trees will bud and the sun will shine and we will experience the re-birth of long days. until then our days will get shorter and colder and mother earth will continue to lead by example that death and slowing down are part of the process of rebirth. these darker days call for a different form of self-care -- each of us will be different -- our job is to surrender into the lessons, to listen to the divine communication from the body and learn to lean into the wisdom of what your life is telling you.
drink water and plenty of tea.
stay warm and know that it is encouraged to rest in these heavier days of season change.
